Archaeological gem
Discover one of the masterpieces of Roman Limburg: the Stevensweert kantharos. A decorated silver drinking cup made 2,000 years ago. In the Roman era, the cup made a remarkable journey from the Mediterranean to Limburg, where it was found in the Meuse near Stevensweert in the 1940s. The discovery of the cup caused quite a stir. It has been on display at the Valkhof Museum in Nijmegen since 1961, but especially for this exhibition the kantharos is making its way back to Limburg – much like it did 2000 years ago.
We do not exactly know how the drinking cup ended up here in Roman times. The cup was already extremely valuable back then. But why and how did such a valuable object as the kantharos ultimately ended up in the Meuse? Perhaps even more impressive is what the drinking cup loosened when it was picked from a dredger in Stevensweert in the early 1940s, after having spent almost 2000 years in oblivion in the Meuse. Discover the journey that the kantharos has made from April 27, 2024 in the Limburgs Museum.
