50 Years of Thielen

Through the eyes of the master

Feb. 3, 2019 until June 10, 2019

Due to success extended until 10 June 2019!

From 3 February 2019, the Limburgs Museum and Museum van Bommel van Dam will be presenting art that takes you by surprise: gigantic paintings involving years of work. These are the works of Evert Thielen (born 1954) who is returning to the city of his birth, Venlo, in honour of the celebration of his 50th year as an artist. Never before has so much work by this well-known and highly esteemed artist been exhibited together in one place.

50 Years of Thielen - Through the eyes of the master at the Limburgs Museum
You can't miss the mighty polyptychs created by Evert Thielen, taking literally years to complete. His complete oeuvre of polyptychs, six impressive giants, can be admired in the exhibition 50 Years of Thielen - Through the eyes of the master at the Limburgs Museum. They are accompanied in this exhibition by an additional 115 (!) smaller paintings, providing a complete picture of the life and work of this prolific artist.

The instant recognizability of Thielen's art is often seen as the key to his widespread appreciation and success. Nevertheless, there are countless layers of meaning behind this first impression. Thielen's method is also very special; it has its origins in the techniques of the old masters. For example, he spent many years examining the centuries-old masterpiece The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb (The Ghent Alterpiece) by the Van Eyck brothers in Ghent, and was inspired by their method. Thielen uses multiple layers of homemade oil paint and tempera, which provide bright colours with great depth. Thielen captures the world of today using the techniques of the past.

The exhibition offers the unique opportunity to admire Thielen's working method in progress; he is still working on his last polyptych. This will therefore be displayed in its temporary, unfinished state at the Limburgs Museum.

50 Years of Thielen - Sketches and drawings at Museum van Bommel van Dam
Museum van Bommel van Dam will be presenting a parallel exhibition 50 Years of Thielen - Sketches and drawings at the same time: a selection of 75 sketches by Thielen, preliminary studies for his paintings. This parallel exhibition of sketches and drawings is being held in the future home of Museum van Bommel van Dam: the former post office at Keulsepoort in Venlo. This monumental building is due to be renovated in 2020, but the public can dive into Evert Thielen's oeuvre before the builders get to work.
